The Garden of Medicinal Plants of the Research Institute of Medicinal Plants in Plewiska (near Poznań) was founded in 1946. It was situated in the old manour park from XIX century. The garden was established by prof. Wacław Strażewicz – Nestor of Polish phytotherapy. The garden is situated on a flat surface and covers an area of 3 hectares. It is surrounded by farm buildings and fields. There is a little pond on its area. In 1980 the Garden of Medicinal Plants was admitted as a monument of culture and it was entered in a register of monuments (No 1803/A).
In the Garden 1500 taxa have been collected. Over 400 taxa were the subjects of particular research referring to acclimatization, breeding, cultivation, and phytochemistry. The research on these plants was the base for working out the new forms of plant medicines. The gathering of collection of medicinal and aromatic plants and delivering of raw material for the futher research are the main tasks of the garden.
There are the following divisions in the Garden of Medicinal Plants:
- Division of Plant Taxonomy – it consists of 416 species and serves for didactic aims. Learning the taxonomy of medicinal plants and their active compounds contained in them is possible here
- Division of Experimental Cultivation – it consists of about 500 species. Studies referring to seed production, development and cultivation of plants as well as the estimation of value of herbal raw material are carried out thanks to this section. There are some attractive species being under protection eg. Adonis veranalis L., Arnica montana L., Dictamnus albus L.
- Division of Trees and Shrubs – it consists over 200 species. Two of them - Ulmus laevis Poll. and Pinus nigra Arnold are the monuments of nature.
- Division of Greenhouse Plants – it consists of about 400 species of medicinal and ornamental plants. Here one can pay attention to the dessert plants (cacti and other succulent plants)
In the collections of the Garden there are about 10000 of herbarial sheets, 20000 of seed samples and the rich collection of dy herbal raw materials.
Phytotherapeutists, homeopaths, students, farmers and other people intersted in medicinal plants are trained in herb – production and phytotherapy in our Garden.
Pupils of primary, secondary schools and colleges can learn the morphology and phenology of medicinal plants.
